Faster extra lanes on A12 between Westervoort and the German border

Faster extra lanes on A12 between Westervoort and the German border

| General

Road users in Gelderland will have extra lanes on the A12 one year earlier than planned. Next year, an extra provisional lane will be opened in both directions on the section between Westervoort and the Oud-Dijk junction. The widening of the A12 will be completed by the end of 2023: one year before the completion of the entire major road project ViA15. In this project, a new section of motorway will be built between the A15 at Bemmel and the A12 at Duiven/Zevenaar and the A15 and A12 will have extra lanes.

This is evident from the initial overall planning by GelreGroen consortium of contractors, which is to continue the A15 motorway and widen the existing A12 and A15 motorways on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat. With the accelerated widening of the A12, the wishes in the Liemers and Achterhoek are being fulfilled. The region wants the traffic problems on the A12 to be solved quickly. The consortium of contractors also wants to open a temporary connection Zevenaar-Oost to the A12 by the end of next year. By the end of 2024, GelreGroen wants to have completed the entire road project.

Minister Van Nieuwenhuizen (Infrastructure and Water Management): "Good news for motorists and truck drivers. I am delighted that the bottlenecks on the A12 will be resolved first and that traffic in De Liemers and Achterhoek will be able to flow through better by the end of next year. This is very welcome for the people who are on the road on daily basis and for the companies in the region that can be reached better and faster then".

Traffic jam approach A12
When tendering for the road project, Rijkswaterstaat paid extra attention to reducing the current traffic problems on the A12 motorway and concentrating on reducing inconvenience during road works. GelreGroen's approach is the result. The arrival of the new Zevenaar-Oost connection will make 7Poort business park more accessible. In addition, GelreGroen will keep the Griethse Poort - the current Zevenaar connection to the A12 motorway - open until the new Zevenaar-West connection to the new A15 motorway is realised.

Nuisance limitation local roads
In the first years, GelreGroen's focus was on the widening of the A12 motorway, the construction of a construction road near the future A15 motorway and the construction of a viaduct with which the future A15 motorway will cross the Betuwe Route in the municipality of Lingewaard. To spare the local road network, the construction road will cross most of the local roads with temporary viaducts or traffic lights. The construction road will be used for the supply of materials for the construction of roads, viaducts and the bridge over the Pannerdensch Kanaal. The bridge will be built by GelreGroen in the final stage of the construction period.

Design proposal bridge
GelreGroen made a proposal for a design of the bridge over the Pannerdensch canal. The design proposal by architect Ney & partners provides for a cycle path that hangs under the bridge. GelreGroen adds another footpath. In the middle of the bridge, the contractor wants to create a viewpoint where cyclists and walkers have an unobstructed view of the Pannerdensch Canal and the floodplains. Opportunities for nature will be included in the design from the outset. An example of this are nesting corridors for bank swallows, which the contractor wants to build in the pillars of the bridge.

Mobility Commissioner Van der Wal of the province of Gelderland: "Contractor combination GelreGroen has made a design proposal for an iconic bridge that does right to the interests of the surrounding area. I am pleased with their proposal for a bridge that will provide cyclists and walkers with a new connection between the Liemers and the Betuwe and that they can experience without being disturbed by passing motorized traffic".

Start of work
GelreGroen is expected to start actual implementation at the end of 2020. To this end, the contractor is engaged in preparatory work, such as the design process, soil investigation, setting up its organisation, making plans, purchasing and applying for permits. Rijkswaterstaat has started preparatory work so that the consortium of contractors can get to work quickly after a positive decision by the Council of State on the appeals to the Routing Decree.

Project ViA15
The roads around Arnhem are getting busier and busier. This is hampering economic and spatial development in the region. There are daily traffic jams on the A12, A50, A325 and N325 (Pleijroute). In the ViA15 road project, the province of Gelderland and the national government are working together on a robust solution for the traffic situation in the Arnhem-Nijmegen region. The ViA15 project involves the extension of the A15 from the Ressen junction to the A12 between Duiven and Zevenaar. There will also be additional lanes on the A12 between Westervoort and the Oud-Dijk junction and on the A15 between the Valburg and Ressen junctions. The extension of the A15 will create a direct connection between the port of Rotterdam and Germany. The ViA15 road project also improves regional traffic flow. As a result, road users will travel faster between Nijmegen/Arnhem, the Liemers and the Achterhoek. This will benefit the regional economy and employment. Contractor consortium GelreGroen will realise the project in the period 2020-2024.
